DWTS: All Marie, all the time

The show opened with Marie Osmond saying "If I make it to the finals, it will be because of the fans." Sure enough, when the first couple safely in the finals was announced, for the second week in a row, it was Marie and Jonathan. So the last became first. Meanwhile, when the final moment came and it was down to Jennie or Helio, it was no surprise whatsoever when a soon-to-be-tearful Jennie's name was called.

And that's how the couple whom the judges selected to give the encore dance to open the results round of the semi-finals was eliminated. It only makes sense in a down-is-up competition where the worst dancer is given a free pass week after week by both the judges and the viewer-voters.

With that, it's settled: Dancing with the Stars is not a dance competition, it is a popularity contest. Head judge Len Goodman tried to voice his disapproval of the evening's outcome when, asked to comment on the final two celebrities (Jennie and Helio) awaiting word of who was staying and who was going, he said "I'd like to see the best dancers in the finals so neither of these two should be going home" -- a clear swipe at Marie's advancement. But if he was serious, he could have chosen a less cryptic expression of his views. Or how about not serving up absurdly inflated scores to her throughout the competition? How about "That was nice Marie, you showed a lot of enthusiasm, I'm sorry about your father, you're not going to faint again are you and here's a 3 for your last dance which was simply dreadful, you barely took a step and when you did it was out of time. By the way, don't you find it a bit creepy that your brother Donny is still following you around after all these years?"

Marie is now, officially, the Sanjaya of Dancing with the Stars. The crucial difference is I don't think there's any sort of ironic or graffiti spirit driving her content-defying success story. Mischief-making was a prime motivation in the campaign to get Sanjaya crowned winner of American Idol, as demonstrated by Web site cheerleaders such as votefortheworst.com. But with Marie, I think there are just a lot of people who love Marie, think everything she does is great and believe she deserves to win. I guess in the free marketplace of reality television, what enough people vote for becomes reality. If she wins then she is the best dancer, even if she is the worst dancer.

For frustrated fans who believe in the "integrity" of the show as a dance competition, Marie would seem a disaster, but maybe if she wins it will force the producers to address the obvious design flaw in the show's selection process -- maybe the judges should have the final say, at least about the final winner. Anyway, for the sheer entertainment value of the online equivalent of a barroom brawl, I hope Marie wins. The ABC message boards will light up.

Other notable news of Tuesday night's show: Avril Lavigne's appearance/performance. First: What is she doing on Dancing with the Stars. I thought she was a punky rebel. Here she was glammed up, looking like Hannah Montana's older sister. When she performed her years-old hit, Complicated, while the best dancer of the season, Sabrina Bryan ( who was voted out a few weeks ago), swirled and slid across the stage with her partner, Mark Ballas, it was just sad. She sounded like she was doing a bad cover of her song.

If Marie wins, we will never watch this show again. She should have gone before or next after
Jane Seymore. She and her obnoxious brother are everywhere. What's up with the TV stations. She should keep her mouth shut. Thanks for allowing me to vent....

If the show is about the best dancer then they should forget "the stars" and put all professional dancers on it. Of course we all know, the celebrities are what make it so popular. Seeing them improve from week to week. Getting to know them better from afar. Sabrina started out as a fabulous dancer. What is fun about that? I think the public realized that she was already a professional, and they tune in to see the drama of trying, failing, working, improving, etc. Emmit Smith won... He certainly wasn't a better dancer than Mario, but I didn't see any article in your paper that Emmitt was undeserving. Marie has worked very hard. Marie is the best entertainer and certainly the most likeable. She definitely deserves to win. She has clearly made the most improvement among the remaining contestants. If you have the number one show in America, I think good business tactics dictate that you don't change the rules. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Go, Marie , go......

Since when did you become such a cynic? Marie Osmond was always a favorite of mine, not because of her looks or talent but because of her grace under fire. When I was a radio announcer in the 70's and 80's, at some BIG stations, I played her music. It was sometimes painful, but the lady was always a role model in spite of personal demons that were becoming apparent. This is neither now nor has it ever been a talent competition. The "sorry about your dead dad" line is really cute and shows what a class act you are (low). This lady has also just put a 16 year old in rehab and is going through a painful divorce yet continues to smile and give an entertaining, albeit sometimes flawed, performance. It would be nice if you could live up to her standards instead of being a jerk. Everyone that performs on that show exposes themselves to people like you. But in modern days of blogs and feedback, people like you get exposed to people like me. Must hurt to know that people really do not care what you think, eh? I have not voted in this contest, but due to your amazingly obnoxious self-appointed expertise, I am appointing myself an expert and I will vote. Guess whose number I am pushing?

I cannot believe that ABC is allowing Donnie to dominate and encourage viewers to vote for Marie. She is the worst dancer-- she is probably being kept in by ABC who likes the Donnie-ET process. Who knows about the authenticity of this mysterious "fan" base. She needs to leave now!!
