LOST: another goodie from "Confirmed Dead"...

Ben told Locke's group Charlotte's full name. It is Charlotte Staples Lewis. Sound familiar somehow?

That's because you may have heard of Clive Staples Lewis -- aka C.S. Lewis, the eminent British writer of the Narnia books.

By the way, Mr. Lewis' friends and family called him...Jack.

First off, about the ship that found the alleged wreckage of Oceanic 815 in the Sunda Trench? That was the Christiane 1.

And as anyone who has been following the storyline on www.find815.com knows, that's the ship that lovelorn Sam Thomas hitched a ride on, in hopes of finding his lost love, Oceanic flight attendant Sonya.

Sam's also the one who took down the ROV 01 to explore the ocean floor, and discovered the wreckage, using coordinates which he had thought would bring them to the Black Rock. The Christiane 1's circumspect mission has something to do with the very mysterious Maxwell Group, which is connected to -- surprise -- Big Daddy Widmore.

OK: How many people think Charles Widmore planted that plane wreckage there in the ocean? With some random (and very fakey-looking) corpses in it?

Sawyer's holding a gun on Ben, but Locke says it's his mess and he'll clean it up. He prepares to shoot Ben, but Ben tells him: "I have information you need. I have answers."

Locke asks him: "What is the monster? What is the black smoke?" Ben looks puzzled, says he doesn't know. But he does know Charlotte's full name and background, and the names of her group from the helicopter. "These people are a threat...and I know what they're doing here. I know what they want. They want me."

How does he know? "Because I have a man on their boat."

Flashback to Eleuthera, the Bahamas. Frank Lapidus is watching a TV report of Oceanic 815 being found. He knows the pilot, Seth Norris. Underwater camera shows a corpse that's supposed to be Norris, and Lapidus calls the Oceanic hotline, says it can't be Norris because there's no wedding ring. Also that he, Lapidus, was supposed to pilot that flight that day. Which probably explains why he looks all guilty and FutureJack-ish, with an awful beard (but Jeff Fahey's is at least real).

On Island, Lapidus climbs uphill to find... the red bull last seen at the Flame station. His sat-phone is smashed, so he shoots off a flare. Charlotte sees it and wants to go, but Ben grabs Karl's gun and shoots her. Luckily she's wearing a Kevlar vest and is OK.

Jack's group finds Lapidus. Says chopper got hit by lightning, but "I put her down safe and sound, right over there." There's the helicopter. And Jack, Kate and the other Lostaways look very happy.

Flashback to Naomi, who's telling Matthew Abbadon that this is the wrong team to send with her on a "high-risk op in dodgy territory."

"What if we find survivors?" Naomi asks. Matthew: "There were no survivors." She is simply to get the team in and out without getting anyone killed. Uh-huh.

On Island, Juliet's patching up Lapidus. He asks her name, she tells him, and he realizes her name was not on Oceanic 815's manifest. He tells Miles: "She's a native."

Miles goes ballistic: "Where is he? We're here for Benjamin Linus. Where is he?"

Flashback to Medenine, Tunisia: As newspapers report the discovery of the Oceanic wreckage, Charlotte Lewis and another woman bribe their way into a desert dig site and discover the skeleton of a polar bear -- which was wearing a leather collar with Dharma's Hydra logo on it. Charlotte smiles.

On Island, Charlotte drops from a tree into the water, where Locke and his group find her. She says she can't believe they're Oceanic 815 survivors and asks several questions, but Locke doesn't want anyone to tell her anything. And he tells her that she is going with them, because "We don't want to be found."

Jack's group, which includes Juliet as well as Sayid, sees Charlotte's transponder signal moving toward them. But the transponder turns out to be tied to the collar of Vincent, the Dog of Doom. So they know Locke has Charlotte.

Flashback to Inglewood, Calif.: Miles Straum hears a radio report on Oceanic 815 being found and "all 324 passengers confirmed dead." He goes into Mrs. Gardiner's house and performs a sort of exorcism on the spirit of her murdered grandson, gets the spirit to show him where cash and drugs are hidden in a wall vent. Tells Mrs. G, "Yeah, he's at peace now."

On the Island, Sawyer beats up Ben for telling him that back in the real world, he could never compete with Jack for Kate's affections.

Miles demands to be taken to Naomi's body. He prays over her, and somehow her corpse tells him that it was indeed Locke who killed her, not Kate or Jack. Sat-phone beeps; Charlotte is 3 km away, and they want to find her. Dan (who describes himself as a physicist) also notices the strange quality of light on the Island; it "doesn't scatter quite right." Dan and Miles give up their guns when Sayid snipes at them from the jungle.

Flashback: Daniel Faraday is at home in Essex, Mass., watching a TV report of Oceanic 815's wreckage being found in the Indian Ocean's Sunda Trench, and he weeps.

Back on the Island, Dan jumps from the helicopter as its controls go haywire and everyone's panicking. He lands, then meets Jack and Kate. At first he says he's there to rescue them, but then his boss George tells him otherwise on the sat-phone.

Locke and his group continue toward the Others' barracks. He says they have to detour by a cabin because they are "supposed to." Sawyer: "Mind telling us who you're gettin' your orders from, Colonel Kurtz?" Locke says his orders come from a taller Walt, and that Walt saved him when Ben shot him and left him for dead in the Dharma death pit. Sawyer's skeptical, but Ben is less so. Locke shows them where the bullet passed right through him -- he's alive, he says, because there was no kidney there for the bullet to hit. Both Ben and Locke are startled when Hugo says something intimating that he saw Jacob's cabin -- but Hugo pretends he meant the Oceanic jet's cabin.

Jack and Kate find a trunk fallen from the chopper. It has gas masks and hazmat bags in it. They ask Dan what it's all about, and he says: "Rescuing you and your people -- can't really say it's our primary objective."

"Then what is?" Jack asks. He doesn't find out yet, of course. But we do!

On a rocky beach, Jack, Kate and Dan find another parachutist, Miles, who pulls a gun on them and accuses Kate of killing Naomi.

LOST: Meet the freighter folk

Tonight at 8, on the second episode of Lost S4, we'll meet several mysterious new characters hailing from Not Penny's Boat.

Are they, as Ben says, "the bad guys"? Are they from Big Daddy Widmore's camp, or perhaps from the Hanso Foundation and the Dharma Initiative?

Lance%20Reddick.jpg
We've already met one enigmatic new character, Matthew Abbadon, who turned up at the hat factory last week purporting to be a lawyer for Oceanic. He tried, not very subtly, to pump FutureHugo for information: "Are they still alive?" he asked. Matthew is played by Lance Reddick (left), who was on HBO's The Wire.

We also briefly saw one of the four newest actors at the end of the season premiere, when Jack and Kate met the guy who parachuted from the "rescue" freighter's helicopter.

TV Guide has a roundup of the new Lost actors, and there are no huge spoilers there. But if you'd rather not know too much about these new faces, skip going to the jump.
