LOST: 'Meet Kevin Johnson'

Flashback: In the alley, Tom tells Michael they've been keeping tabs on him. He guesses correctly that Michael told Walt of the two murders he did on the Island, and that's why Walt now hates him.

"You can't kill yourself, the Island won't let you," Tom tells him. "You've got more work to do, Mike."

Sure enough, once he is back home, Michael's suicide attempts fail because his gun won't fire. He then sees the Oceanic 815 wreckage reports on TV, and he goes to see Tom (who's staying in a plush penthouse suite with his handsome young lover, Arturo. So Tom WAS gay!).

Michael asks: "So you people just come and go?" "Some of us," Tom says.

Then Michael asks about the Oceanic 815 wreckage that was found, and Tom says: "It's not your plane, it's a phony," a plant by Charles Widmore, who doesn't want anyone else to know where 815 really crashed.

Michael, all Mr. I'm-So-Skeptical, says: "Prove it." Tom proves it with a secret file showing what seems to be solid evidence: photos of 324 empty graves in Thailand, etc.

He gives Michael a new identity ("Meet Kevin Johnson," Tom says, handing over his new U.S. passport) and a job to do. Michael's assignment is to join Widmore's freighter as a deckhand in a few days, when it ports in Fiji.

Michael is then to kill everyone aboard... before they can kill all his "friends" back on the Island. This, Tom tells Michael, is how he will redeem himself.

I'm confused about the bodies of the 324 "passengers." Last week, didn't the captain hint that Ben was somehow responsible for procuring them? I seem to recall Capt. even asking, "Where does one get 324 bodies?"
Now we have Tom spelling out exactly where the bodies came from. Wouldn't the captain of the ship powered by Widmore know this? Argh.

Darla: Those exchanges made me wonder, too, just who is supposed to have arranged to plant those 324 bodies on the wreckage: Charles Widmore, or Ben Linus? Apparently both have untold resources and connections. I think that in today's EW.com recap, it's brought up that perhaps someone is pulling a "Palpatine" here and playing both ends of the game. But who's faking out whom? Is Ben planting bodies in fake 815 wreckage and making it seem that Widmore is behind it? Or is Widmore the villain here, concocting a reason to seize Ben in order to control the Island? Not that anyone would really need an excuse for nabbing him, seeing as Ben is a mass murderer. But then, since the Island doesn't seem to be under anyone's legal jurisdiction, who would be judge and jury, and who would be the executioner? Appears that either Ben or Widmore -- or both -- have appointed themselves to that job...
