Couple of good recaps of last night's Lost ep are online today. Adam B. Vary sits in for the traveling Doc Jensen on EW.com ... and as usual, Lostpedia is quickly building the most detailed of recaps. So what do you think? Is Sayid's turning Michael in to the Captain the incident that FutureBen refers to (in "The Economist") as "the last time you thought with your heart instead of your gun"? Is Alex pregnant? Did Ben deliberately send Karl and Danielle to their deaths at the hands of the Others? Or were they shot by someone from the freighter, in order to capture Alex as a hostage to use against Ben? And is Danielle, in fact, really dead at all? UPDATE: One more thoughtful synopsis that examines the Ben-vs.-Widmore villainy question, from the L.A. Times.... Further thoughts: The women of the Oceanic Six seem to be faring better in the future than the men are. Is this perhaps because Sun and Kate both have children to care for, while the men (Jack, Hugo, Sayid) are isolated, living with their guilt and a need to redeem themselves? Neither of the women, notably, seem to be suffering the emotional torments or suicidal impulses of the men. Jin is publicly believed to have died in the crash of 815. Or perhaps he was supposed to be one of the alleged eight initial survivors, two of whom did not live to be rescued (according to the cover story Jack is telling). So... is there even a body buried under that Korean tombstone we saw last week, in "Ji Yeon"? Did Jin die in an attempt to get Sun off the Island safely? Or is Jin still alive on the Island? Is Michael the one in the coffin that Jack saw in the Season 3 finale? I have always thought so, and "Meet Kevin Johnson" gave me no reason to suppose otherwise. Michael is not one of the media-anointed Oceanic Six, as we know now. The O6 are: Jack, Hugo, Kate, Baby Aaron, Sayid and Sun. Michael has been flying under the radar ever since he and Walt left the Island (probably with faked passports, like the one Tom gave to him). He was, we know, living under another alias even before he became "Kevin Johnson." The man in the coffin was supposed to be from New York and was identified in the news clipping neither as Kevin Johnson nor as Michael Dawson. His full name was never seen, but it was something like "John Grantham." (Or perhaps "Jeremy Bentham," in what would be another Lost nod to history?) His unattended wake took place in a largely African-American neighborhood in L.A. And he apparently had committed suicide, which is what we now know is driving Michael. It looks as if FutureJack, like Michael, is unable to kill himself. Hugo told him the Island wants them back, presumably to save others and redeem themselves, and by the time Jack and Kate met at the airport, he knew they "have to go back." Can't wait to see what happens in five weeks! |

I thought this was a good episode, but definitely not among my favorites. The suicide attempts were just too disturbing. Call me wacky, but I don't care to watch someone speed into a wall or hold a gun up to their head and pull the trigger.
As for the ending, I think Ben planned all along to have Karl and Danielle die. The look on his face when Karl was cozying up to Alex said it all: This has to stop.
I'm also now firmly in the "Jin is alive" camp. No real reason; just because I want him to be. :)
