Carly Smithson Voted Off For Blasphemy????

9:42 AM Fri, Apr 25, 2008 |
Nancy Churnin   E-mail   News tips

I was bewildered enough when Carly Smithson was voted off American Idol after the judges raved about her performance. And then I picked up my New York Times this morning to read Edward Wyatt's story about online chat boards buzzing about her decision to sing the title song from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar as being blasphemous. In the song, Judas criticizes Jesus and the show, as a whole, portrays Jesus as struggling to accept his role. Wyatt says that within hours of Carly's performance, a viewer on the show's official Web site, AmericanIdol.com, warned her choice of song might eliminate her. Could that really be what happened?

That's is stupid...it's a song. And she sang it very well. I am appalled that America judged by the song she sang rather than by her performance.

I am a staunch Republican and evangelical Christian and I don't think her song choice mattered diddlysquat.

It was the "screaming" Simon mentioned that perhaps did her in....I didn't think it was screaming but maybe borderline. It just wasn't the best performance from her but who cares?!

ALLLL of these kids are so enormously talented and the world knows by now that if you even make the Top Ten and have your act together, this is now The American Idol LAUNCHPAD. It's all about "lift-off" from here on out. Go for it, babygirl!

As with everything in our society today it wouldn't surprise me. It was a song that has been played on the radio, sung on broadway and Carly sang it well. i think that it is a shame on us as a country, a nation that we make something huge out of a simple song. I hope that she goes on to do great things with her life and her career. She is very talented unfortunately American Idol is more a popularity contest then it is about talent.

I don't think her song choice had anything to do with her being voted off. Her fan base (on the AI boards, you can see which contestant is most popular by the number of posts on each) was much smaller than the Davids and Jason. She just didn't have the vote support.

A republican and a christian? An oxymoron is you ask me. Jesus said be not of this world and yet you into politics huh? Let me guess you admire these christian zionists like Hagee, Patterson and others who seek war believing they will be "raptured". Fools. Evangelicals is what is ruining christians as a whole. You rather listen to Paul the false apostle then Yeshua.

No I really dont think the song had anything to do with Carly being voted off. Jesus Christ Superstar is not really that big of deal to Christians anymore. Carly just never had that big of a fanbase and has has many so-so performances. It did suck that she got voted off on a week that she was great though. Not that I voted for her haha. I voted for Jason Castro all two hours.

Her song choice? No, the song did not, but many of us were weary of looking at her tattoo. She has a beautiful voice, she will be successful. She just does not have the fan base that the others do.

Carly chose the wrong song this week... not because of the lyrical content, but because of the chorus, which was too high for her limited range. I don't understand the fascination with this woman. Her voice is reed-thin as the pitches get higher and shaky as they get lower. She has power only in a very limited middle range.

With regret, I think her choice of songs did her in. I really liked it and thought it was the best of the evening. I thought she was the single person on the show with star power. The others are too young and the few who seem to be top pics by the public appear to be very young males. I hadn't watched American Idol before this, and doubt I'll go back. I do hope that in 10 more years, society will have progressed enough that these sorts of things won't factor into public opinion.

The musical was about all the people in Jesus' life that just didn't get what he was about.

I don't watch American Idol to begin with, but if this girl was voted off because she sang a song from an award winning play, that's all the more reason NOT to watch.

to the oxymoron guy.... get a life!!!! and I find your comments objectionable....

we are talking about Carly and fact is she should be in the top TWO.... my theory is that since she was not born in the USA she did not get as many votes... more so that her song choice of Jesus Christ Superstar..

and I also feel other song choices in the show have hurt her...

Carly Smithson has an incredible voice and I think it is unfair if she was voted off due to her song selection. She did not initially choose that song.. Andrew Lloyd Webber did!!!! He thought that song would showcase her strong voice better. So, she should be allowed to come back and sing again since she is being penalized for something that was out of her control.

I didn't hear her rendition, but I consider "Jesus Christ Superstar" the most evangelical work of art I've ever experienced. My return to Jesus came several years later, but the music bearing His message of love and sacrifice has stayed with me to this day. At age 51 I say, God bless Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice!

She's a screeching harpy and by far the worst technical singer in the group. She's already a failed singer; the record that she released prior to 'Idol' sold 300 copies or so.

And people are wondering why she got kicked off?!?

Is this blog going to dedicate most of its space to American Idol and LOST? There are plenty of other, some would say more interesting, shows to watch.
