Idol: Paula's "explanation"

How did the loopy judge see into the future to comment on a performance that hadn't even happened? She told Entertainment Tonight she was "trying to give my critique for Jason Castro and scribbled Jason's name, and that was David Cook's!"
No way. In the notes in question, she'd panned Jason's "second" song for lacking charm and leaving her empty. If that was meant for David, why did she turn around and say to him, "You were fantastic, and it was a song that wasn't known"? This is the type of lie a 5-year-old would tell. The logic is missing.
So what really happened? The judges probably watched the rehearsals and based their notes on them. Which is all kinds of wrong, but it's believable. But it still doesn't explain why Paula Abdul didn't realize that none of the gang had gotten to their second songs yet. "This is hard!" she exclaimed after her slip-up. Yes, recalling the last half-hour of one's life can be a challenge, but most of us manage.

AI is probably going to get a lot of flak about this. Obviously, Paula wasn't paying any attention to the tv performances at all. She's usually up there bopping around any way, so she's not listening. She goes to the dress rehearsal (and so does Simon, I believe) and then bases her comments on what she heard at rehearsal. Is this fair and right? No. As has happened in the past, rehearsal performances and tv performances are sometimes two entirely different things. The judges should ONLY base their comments on the live tv performance and forget what they heard at rehearsal. Or better yet, not attend rehearsal at all, and see the contestants perform for the first time on tv, just like the viewers.

Theresa, you are dead on. I've often wondered if the judges and I were listening to the same performances, and now I know that, at least at times, we are not. If the judges attend the rehearsals, they will inevitably allow it to affect their judgment of the live performances, even if they don't simply script their critiques based on the rehearsals. Also, this doesn't fully allow for the fact that some performers simply feed off a live crowd better than others, raising the level of their performance to match the moment. What a shame! The judges should be banned from rehearsals. That would ensure that the judges and the voters are responding to the same performance.
