I don't see any scandal here, I see marketing. A marketing machine worth hundreds of millions of dollars doesn't just let a scantily clad picture sneak out onto a popular magazine by one of the worlds best photographers.
They knew what they were doing and are apologizing to keep the tweens parents in check.

God forbid we should ever see the bare back of a teenager. What nonsense. From all the fuss, you'd think she just did a 10-page layout for Hustler Magazine. Come on! Get a grip, people! Teens show much more skin on a public beach, for goodness sake.
Tasteful shot of a pretty girl. Period.

When are you people going to wake up? She's 15, and people like Miley are the source of examplification to our youth which is disintegrating the integrity we as adults try to instill in them. Others may call a photo of a 15 year old girl in this scenario Pornography! Not here! Because she is a celebrity sheltered by media propaganda and prostituting adults whose only interest is making money, it's OK! This world and so called American ethics is disgusting. Wake up America, this is part and parcel to the root cause of teenage problems - need I say more?

Miley Cyrus is a 15 year old. This is a failure of all the adults involved, all of whom should have known better than to allow her to disrobe in the first place and then take pictures. The image in this photo is not the way any fifteen year old should be presented, to be ogled and fantasized about. Some will argue that Liebovitz is just following her art, though it is more difficult to defend when the subject is a minor. Vanity Fair will be given a pass because they are, after all, just a corporation trying to sell magazines. But where were the adults in Cyrus' camp, the ones who's sole interest was to look out for her well being? What were they doing when Liebovitz first started urging Cyrus to undress?
I can not fault Miley for not being able to resist what the adults were pushing on her, but I do worry about the mindset of her guardians who either found nothing wrong with allowing her to take off her clothes or were so imbued with the Hollywood mindset that nudity and sexuality is how you promote a young girl that they did not step in to protect her.

I think its another way for the Cyrus's to create more hype and create more money for her and her dad. (see the Simpsons sisters)

I think the media is blowing this out of proportion. The photos are not that bad or provocative in nature. This another great example how the media takes something small and makes a big deal out of it. What is the point? On the other hand, this is huge for Vanity. I can only imagine the amount of hits their site has received over the last couple of days.

If this were somewhat a perfect world, "Frank" would probably be in the right to some extent. But its not...this is art but unfortunately you have people who dont understand that because they've been brainwashed by society to think otherwise. Parents are supposed to be role models not celebrities. Everyone is human but this is not a mistake and she should not have to apologize. All should look in the mirror before criticizing M.Cyrus. As if anyone out there has never cursed, stolen, killed, hurt, or damned someone for whatever reason. Those are the things people should be concerned about of themselves on a daily basis. Not a type of art. She is like the next A.Jolie.

I wonder what part disney played in this?

This is skilled marketing. She obviously is making an attempt to keep her audience for the future when her current crop of fans grows out of the teeny bopper style. At the same time issuing an apology to Disney and her fans to keep her current status. That said, I think it s a very tasteful pic, that emmulates the famous poster for Le Miserable. Smart kid, and smart dad.

The Disney company is making a big deal out of nothing. They are worried that parents will stop buying all of that Hannah Montana crap for their pre-teen girls if they see these pictures of her. If they were so worried about Miley Cyrus (as a person instead of a meal ticket) why weren't they at the photoshoot when these pictures were taken? Miley's parents WERE there and approved of the pictures beforehand.
Disney wants to keep Miley a little girl as long as they can to milk every last penny they can until she grows up. Well, looks like Miley has grown up and is ready to move on from Disney.

In my opinion...yes at first glance it does just look like a sheet wrapped aroung her which can definately be a bit shocking to see such a young girl doing. However...it wasn't a sheet and she wasn't nude. If she had a bakini top on and covered up the front like she did in the picture all you would end up seeing is a small silly little string. Would it have made a huge difference to people to see a dumb string across her back?? She is a beautiful young lady and has done nothing wrong. I understand disney is supposeded to keep that "wholesome romodel" appeal but hello......time to wake up. She can be a romodel and still do things she likes to do without having people trash her for it. I'm not a big fan of the whole Hannah montanna stuff but she is still a human being and deserves to be treated with respect like every one else. I think people with the drive to succeed and make some thing of themselves are absolutely wondeful.

Really? Was she also embarrased by her dance number on American Idol or that dress with no front she wore to the CMT award show?

My objection is that she's 15 -- period. And that this is part of the push to sexualize girls at ever younger ages, which can have a devastating effect on girls' self-esteem (and a short-circuiting of their childhood). If she's 18 and over -- that's her decision and that's her life. But she's a minor. And let's be honest, this is not a clinical question of how much skin was or wasn't shown, it's about what the shot is trying to convey. From the tousled hair to the look in the eyes, to the bare skin to what looks like a bedsheet (even if it isn't), it's all about sexuality. And even if she has lost her childhood prematurely to celebrity, it is a disturbing and confusing message to the tweens who have admired her.
