Idol: "What we have witnessed is a knockout"

That sentence from Simon Cowell -- directed at Archuleta after he sang "Imagine" -- might come back to haunt the judge. I mean, a knockout? That's implying that Cook totally bombed, which is not the case.
It also implies that Archuleta is everyone's cup of tea. Again, not true. He's, well, decaf. And some of us need more of a kick.
But who do I think will take the prize? The little guy. It'll be fun to see him weep with joy and all.

Come on Darla! In no way is Cowell implying that David Cook bombed. It was apparent that all three judges felt that David Archuleta made the most out of the night by choosing songs that optimally suited his voice and style. And in the end he delivered a stellar performance. David Cook is arguably the most versatile and polished singer of the two and although his performance was very good, it wasn't quite on par with Archuleta's on this night. Both guys are winners and will probably do very well for themselves in the music industry.

Jim, how does that old saying go? Different strokes for different folks. :) I simply preferred David Cook's style and creativity with the songs he chose (and btw, he should also get props for playing the guitar during two of the songs tonight). As for Simon's "knockout" comment, it does definitely imply that Archuleta was way better than Cook. I myself don't see it. I agree that David A.'s first song was incredible -- maybe the best of the entire season -- but "Imagine" didn't bring me to tears or anything. (Nor did that original tune.) But that's just my opinion; I'm glad we can agree to disagree in a friendly manner. :)

I enjoy your comments Darla and I agree with your assessment of the night.
Is it just me, am I the only one who doesn't get David Archuleta? He has no timbre or color to his voice. He sings well, stays in key, his voice is powerful and all, but it sounds very nasally, like he has a head cold. I guess it's the 8-15 year old girls that are doing all the voting for him. My favorites Carly and Michael Johns are out, but I have grown to like David Cook. At first I thought he was a bit arrogant, but the more you got to know him, you understood his "act". I would buy a David Cook CD (or download an album on iTunes tomorrow). If I were a record producer I would be worried David A. is too young and fragile to handle the life of a pop star. I think Archuleta will win though...

As in the past, the winner will not have the most lucrative career of the contestants this year (don't cry for him, though, he'll be fine). I guarantee that over the next 3 years Big D outsells Little D 3+ to 1. After that, we'll see, but Little D's demographic is much smaller. He's too old for the Hannah crowd, too uncool for the HS/College crowd, and too young/irrelevant/unknown to the under-grand parent age crowd.

This show is a perfect example of what is wrong with America. How all of you idiots can devote so much time to a TV show that consist of an arrogant, self absorbed British jerk and a poster girl for far to many prescription drugs amazes me. You should all feel guilty for watching this over hyped trash. Don’t you all ever feel like suckers for buying into this? If you don’t, you are all blind idiots.

What about Fantasia? I actually turned the channel it made me sick. I have no idea what language she was speaking. Thoroughly disgusting. What happened to her?

I was impressed with the moxie the kid showed last night. I was sure the nerves would get to him, but I think Cookie was more affected than Archie.

It would have been nice if the judges had at least acknowledged Cookie's "journey" this season as one that has encompassed consistency and originality.

Hey Bob, tell us how you really feel!

Rigged show. I had not watched since Carly Smithson was voted off. David A. forgot lyrics to a song he was singing. He should have been voted off then.

I don't feel like an idiot for watching a show that has given young talents a chance to prove themselves and has also given the audience some really incredible performances over the past 7 years.

As for the judges, it may be time for some more objective judging. As the professional vocalists on the AI boards do, they rate the singers on diction, phrasing, breathing, pitch, control, range. I would like to see this type of judging implemented on AI, where points are given for each of the above items, plus an extra for performance (which would be the only subjective factor). That could possibly make the contest more fair, and maybe influence the viewers to understand what true talent is. And maybe then singers like Michael Johns and Carly Smithson might not go home too early after all.

David Cook's custom is good, but he is not a rocker. Real rockers don't come from a contest, they learn by the hard way. His voice is not good enough, and his a beginner guitar player. Nice custom , maybe for halloween. On the other hand David Archuleta has a privileged voice, technically excellent, and a very wide range of tones. He needs a good guide, to define his style and more training to get musical maturity. And he is a better producer's option for a long term business.

Did anyone else notice that the recap footage of D.A.'s "Imagine" (at end of show) was totally different than his actual performance? In the recap he was off-key and there were stars all over the backdrop. ODD!!

I did notice that, Cecilia -- he was way off-key during that clip! After it became obvious a few seasons ago that the recap footage is different from the live performance, the show admitted that they film some of the recap stuff during dress rehearsals. So that was obviously the case with David A. last night.

WOW! Even David C thinks David A did better. That's what he told US Magazine.com. http://www.usmagazine.com/david-cook-david-archuleta-nailed-it-last-night
