Tivo Apocalypse

EARNS DIRECTV.JPG

How interesting, Bridgette, that you raise the question about Tivo. Yes, ours did it too. We were able to retrieve the missed minutes by keeping the tuner on the same channel and rewinding to the beginning of the next broadcast -- the Channel 4 news. But then another weird Tivo-related event occurred. Right around the time the Tivo cut out, we got a call from DirecTV, our satellite provider. (We have one of the last Tivo high-def DirecTV receivers in existence.) DirecTV was offering a free upgrade to its own high-def DVR, which I said I wasn't crazy about, since my boys love Tivo. And then the guy started throwing out threats -- mild ones, of course, but threats nonetheless.

He said a lot of the high-def shows would be disappearing from the Tivo DirecTV receiver. (DirecTV severed its relationship with Tivo several years ago.) In other words, DirecTV would no longer broadcast shows in high definition on the Tivo high-def receiver. He said the NFL Sunday Ticket package would be one of many disappearing acts. Grim. I have tried to call DirecTV to get confirmation, but nobody at the 800 number seems able to give it.
