T.O.'s debut

It probably shouldn't be a surprise that Terrell Owens isn't bad in his television action debut. He's appeared as himself before -- most notably in a spot performance as a wide receiver in Oliver Stone's Any Given Sunday. After all, he's been playing a character he created -- T.O. -- in the media since he's been in the NFL, so he's got plenty of experience.

But on the MyNetwork sitcom, Under One Roof, he plays a character created by someone else when he appears as a con man posing as the long-lost baby brother of the sitcom's patriarch, Winston Hill (Kelly Perine).

Terrell is aided in making a good impression by choosing such an awful show on which to make his debut. The show, a vehicle for the improbably ubiquitous Flavor Flav, is a family sitcom in which one brother has struck it rich (Perine) and is forced to take in his ex-con, no-account brother (Flavor Flav). The writing is so formulaic, it's like it was spit out by some screenwriting-made-easy software. And the jokes -- the horror, the horror.

But T.O. already has the first hurdle of celebrity acting cleared -- the ability to look relaxed and comfortable on camera. He's not exactly George Clooney (yet); then again, go back and take a look at mullet-era George Clooney when he was popping up on one lousy sitcom after another. His dialogue was terrible, the jokes weren't funny, his timing wasn't great. But the cool and the charisma were there.

The same can be said of Terrell Owens. So when it comes to his acting future, time and opportunities will tell if T.O. ends up standing for Turned Off or Turned On.
