Press Tour: Karl Rove is in the house

He may have refused to appear before Congress, but Karl Rove appeared before a ballroom full of television reporters on Monday afternoon as part of the Fox News panel. Mr. Rove was there in his role as a "contributor' to the Fox News team, but his presence created a surreal buzz and dramatic tension to what is more typically just another assembly-line promotional event.

First came a general question about the whole slippery-slope aspect of Mr. Rove, so centrally involved in so many ongoing and headline generating stories, appearing in the role of a commentator on a news network covering those stories.

"My job is to help people better understand what's going on, the process. I'm not acting as a reporter, I'm an analyst, and it's not like any of us are coming from completely neutral positions."

A little later, asked about particular events and decisions within the Bush administration, Mr. Rove coyly demurred. "You'll have to wait for my book, which will be available in the Fall 09, $29.95. But if you pre-order on Amazon, you get a discount."

With that, questioners in the audience turned to John Moody, a Fox News' executive vice president. Did he see a conflict with having Karl Rove in the Fox News mix, particularly in light of Mr. Rove's refusal to appear before Congress after being subpoenaed? Does that undercut the news network's credibility.

"No, my goodness," said Mr. Moody, going on to say "his difference of opinion with Congress is between Congress and Karl."

So TCA members tried a different tack, asking Mr. Moody if Mr. Rove was on the honor system when it came to maintaining appropriate boundaries and conduct as a member of the Fox News team. This question came after Mr. Rove had proudly declared that he had contributed to John McCain's campaign and said that while he plays "no official role" the Republican candidate's presidential bid, "yeah, I do get phone calls."

Mr. Moody's response was, once again, absolute and enthusiastic. "He's always on the honor system. I don't think Karl would cross an ethical line."
