Jeff Dunham gets out the checkbook for local charities

ACHMED-DUNHAM[1].jpgAfter the Mavericks' heartbreaking loss to the Denver Nuggets on Saturday, American Airlines Center was one very sad place. But less than 24 hours earlier, it felt like the happiest place on Earth after Jeff Dunham's sold-out performance. A hometown guy who graduated from Richardson High School, Dunham got a standing ovation at the AAC even before he began giving large gifts to local charities. His parents, now in their 80s, were in the crowd. He brought his mom onstage and had the crowd sing happy birthday to her. He spoke of having his dad take him to the Dallas Public Library's Bookmobile when he was 8 years old. He mentioned having taken out a book, Fun With Ventriloquism, by Alexander Van Rensselaer, and how it shaped a career that began after reading the book. (Five years later, Dunham was so successful as a working ventriloquist that he was audited by the IRS.) One problem, though: He has felt guilty all these years because he never returned the book. He showed a graphic noting that he now owed $10,281 in overdue book fees. So, he paid them onstage, handing the check to Corinne Hill, assistant director of resource management for the Dallas Public Library. He didn't stop there. (Please click below to read on.)

Before the night was over, he gave out checks for $50,000 each to the North Texas Food Bank and the Salvation Army, where his mom has been a longtime volunteer. Her son just finished a European tour and is about to launch his own show on Comedy Central, where his Christmas special got the highest ratings of any Comedy Central broadcast ever. His DVD is now the highest-selling comedy DVD on amazon.com, and on YouTube, he's up to hundreds of millions of page views. And he owes it all to an overdue book. Corinne Hill said the library was approached about three weeks ago by Dunham's management. It was made clear, however, that he intended to keep the book. "He's very attached to it," Hill said. So, the $10,281 was a combination of late fees and replacing a vintage book. "Jeff's copy still had the date stamp on it -- 1971," Hill said. "It's an old book, and he's real attached to it. That just charmed me."

How is he famous?

His show was very funny indeed. What a way to give back to a city. Thanks Jeff.

Jeff is one of the good guys, he plied his craft for years w/o alot of notice, not to mention he helps out people and had selflessly given on various occasions. Mentioning the "IRS Audit" was a bit of low blow Granberry, sounds like your jealous or something.

Not amused, He's famous because he's funny. If you haven't watch any of his shows, you've missed on some good comedy. Normally, I would agree with your remark, if you directed them at the Kardashians, or Paris Hilton, or what's-her-name-lady-with-the-million-facelifts- on Celebrity apprentice, who seem to be famous for no apparent reason, but I'll give credit where credit is due and Je-fuh-fuh is pretty funny.

being from Dallas, we went to see our "home boy" when he came through Memphis....he is tooo funny!!His characters are great!! My 10 year old loves him, and can insert a "Dunhamism" correctly into any conversation! Wish he could come to dinner just once to see what he has done to my family!! With all of the "crappy" people grabbing headlines, I am thankful Jeff is out there!!! Wish I had hung out in Richardson more during high school!!!

I went to high school with Jeff (not to mention junior high also, "GOOD NORTHWOOD COUGARS!) Back then he was quiet and very unassuming, but when me performed, you could tell he was destined for something greater.

Contrats Jeff. It couldn't have happened to a better person

He's a world class comedian/ventriloquist! That's why he's famous(dumb question btw!) We went on Friday...one of the funniest shows I've ever seen!

Jeff's show was one of the best shows that I have ever been too. It was hilarious and uplifting at the end. I can't wait until he comes through again. What a great guy he is!!

Au contraire, "chris von danger." Actually, the IRS mention came from Jeff himself. He brings it up often in interviews. I think he's proud of it, and it is a great human-interest footnote. Not many 13-year-olds can claim such an accomplishment. Jealous? No way! I'm thrilled for the guy. Can't think of a nicer guy having such success.
